RE: Gas Prices stopping you from RV'ing

Mudflat and Mike E. really put it in perspective for me. Especially that article mudflat wrote, to break it down to about 120 a day, when most of the hotels I have researched along our planned route are around 90- 120 a night, then to throw in restraunts.

RE: Gas Prices stopping you from RV'ing

As I am planning for our trip using various rv park finding sites, I have noticed that the prices of staying at parks hasn't really gone up much, which makes the choice to get the TT that much easier. Part of our trip will be in florida, visiting friends and exploring and the cost of staying in an RV park vs. the cost of a Hotel, especially in the hotspots like Miami and Orlando, makes the choice pretty easy.

RE: Gas Prices stopping you from RV'ing

I can see that for the most part, most people are affected. That is why I think we decided to go with a lighter trailer. I still think that what we would spend in gas we save in not having to get hotels, which seems to be the general consensus. And to reply to an earlier post, no, I am not currently in the military serving in Iraq, I am a contractor, working with the marines, am retired military. My wife however is still a soldier serving over here. She retires from the Army next year, and we were planning on taking about 4-5 months traveling this great nation, (and learning how to live with each other again :) )

RE: Gas Prices stopping you from RV'ing

To all: First, Sorry, I was not trying to beat the dead horse, I know there is one forum with a sticky that is 68 pages long, so sorry if that offends. Just enjoy chatting with those who have the experience to kinda see what and how others do things. I do like the idea of staying at the state parks, When we rented a class c, we went to Lake Havasu, and stayed in an rv park, which was right next to a state park, if we had known how much cheaper the state park was, we would have stayed there. That is what I like about these forums, I can find out what works best, and learn from others experiences, although I am sure I will still run across a lot of issues that others have experienced.

RE: Gas Prices stopping you from RV'ing

Well, I am glad to hear that it isn't affecting to many people. That is why we are looking at lighter and more aerodynamic now. The toy hauler we were looking at was nice, but it was heavy.

Gas Prices stopping you from RV'ing

Had a close call the other day, The DW's uncle told her how much gas was costing in the states(currently both in Iraq) as we were researching to buy a toy hauler(towing questions for someone looking to buy). SO for a bit there it was 'heck no, we can't afford gas, so we would never use it. We we are still looking and found some smaller, lighter trailers that she loves now, so the search and re-search continues. But this made me think......how is this affecting all those great people who provided me guidance before? Has the current price of gas hindered how much you use your RV? I explained to the better half that what we pay extra in gas we would make up in savings from not having to get hotels and eat out three meals a day. So how about it? looking to hear from you all Jim

RE: towing question for someone looking to buy

Again, first I want to thank everyone for the responses, which have been very helpful. SO, if I understand this right, for instance, for this particular trailer, its dry weight is 8720, and its GVWR is 14920, so that means that after I fill it with butane, and water, and then all the miscellaneous stuff, crazy stuff like clothes, food, etc., the trailer can't weigh more than 14920. Correct? However if the tow vehicle says max trailer weight 12,500, then, you couldn't safely load the trailer to more than what the truck can handle, and also ensuring that you don't go over the GCWR. Hoping I am on the right track :) Thanks again, all, I had no idea that even with something in mind, it would require so much research.

RE: towing question for someone looking to buy

I appreciate the feedback from everyone, it has been helpful, informative and delivered without making one feel like a dunce, which is really the best part :) . I will admit that all of my towing experience has been with the Army, usually a 15 or 20 KW generator, pulled with a 5 ton, so axle weight, has never been a big concern for me. As for the trailer, we have been researching, on-line, for something to buy, and earlier as part of our research we rented a class C, from Cruise America, figuring that if we were going to put down money on an RV, we better make sure we liked it and would put it to use. That is why we decided to go with a trailer instead of a C or A, since we won't be able to become full timers for a while, it just seemed logical not to have something with an engine just sitting around til a nice weekend where we could take it out. During our rental, one neighbor had this particular trailer, and showed us around and my wife absolutely fell in love with it. It was one of the few toy haulers that had a slide out. We still look, since we don't intend to purchase for another 6 months or more, but I have a feeling changing her mind on the trailer is going to be easier said than done :)

RE: towing question for someone looking to buy

Boy that is one BIG trailer with a GWVR of almost 15000 pounds. That is why I am glad I asked in here, I have no idea what GWVR is or how you came up with 15000 pounds. That is why it is important to ask questions. If I am guessing right that is 7560 per axle X 2, or am I way off here? Thanks again, a fifth wheel doesn't sound to bad, I just want to make sure I am not pricing myself out what I can afford :)

RE: Ever been snubbed or ashamed because of your RV?

I don't actually own my own yet, but my wife and I rented one, to see if we wanted to put the money into one, we stayed in three different parks during our rental and saw a lot of different RV's but the one thing that I noticed was that no matter what they had, everyone was super friendly. And with an obvious rental (cruise america) made it even better because they would come up and would love to show us their rigs

RE: towing question for someone looking to buy

Thanks or the quick reply, all, and being hosed is what I was afraid of. I was looking through the FAQ's forum and saw the Payload Capacity and Tongue Weight one, and man did it confuse me. Looks like a truck is in my future, cause the wife really likes that trailer. Thanks again, all, Jim

towing question for someone looking to buy

This may seem like an obvious question, but I have a question about towing capacity. I own a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara, that says it has a towing capacity of 3500 lbs with a hitch wieght of 1200 lbs. We are looking at buying a Forrest River Sandpiper Sport model T31SP, which has a hitch weight of 1160 and an axle weight of 7560. Now I am assuming that this is way to heavy for our Jeep, but I am not sure how this all works, so I was hoping someone could say, yeppers, your hosed, or no it should work because you have to look at..... Any help greatly appreciated. Jim Roach
